General Principles
- Use clear, concise, and professional language at all times.
- Identify your unit before transmitting.
- Wait for acknowledgment before proceeding with lengthy transmissions.
Radio Check Procedure
- Press and hold the PTT button for one second before speaking.
- State: “[Unit number], radio check.”
- Wait for dispatch acknowledgment: “[Unit number] copy, loud and clear.”
- Release the PTT button and await further traffic.
Priority Codes
- Priority 1: Life-threatening emergency, lights and sirens authorized.
- Priority 2: Urgent but not life-threatening.
- Priority 3: Routine transport.
En Route Communication
- Notify dispatch when en route, on scene, and available.
- Provide patient status updates per local policy.
- Use coded language to protect patient privacy (HIPAA).
End of Shift
- Sign off with dispatch before clearing the shift.
- Report any equipment issues or maintenance needs.
- Ensure the unit is restocked and ready for the next crew.
